Advanced Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is an operative procedure in which abdominal and pelvic surgery is accomplished through tiny punctures in the lower abdomen using a television camera and special small instruments. The uterus, and tubes and ovaries, can be examined via the laparoscope and televised to a screen in the operating suite.

There are several procedures that can be performed with laparoscopy surgery including sterilization, lysis of adhesions, removal of ovary cysts and/or ovaries. Some hysterectomies are assisted with the laparoscope as well.

The most common procedure with the laparoscope is for diagnostic purposes. Pelvic diseases such as ovary cysts, pelvic adhesions, endometriosis and tumors can be easily identified through the laparoscope so that appropiate medical or surgical treatment can be given.

At Doctors for Women, we are experienced with the 2 mm laparoscope which is the smallest laparoscope produced. The scope itself is the diameter of a large needle. No incisions are necessary to place the scope into the abdomen. Of course this is performed under general anesthesia;however, this procedure results in much less post operative discomfort and a quicker post operative recovery time. Most patients are back to normal activity the following day.

Pictured at left is a 2 mm laparoscope. It can usually be inserted through a needle puncture and removed without need for suturing.
